WHAT ARE GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMPS?

Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) are a highly efficient renewable heating system that uses energy stored in the ground.

Ground temperatures remain constant, providing consistent efficiency for the heat pump. The latest GSHPs can reach impressive efficiency levels, adjusting their output to match the building’s heat demand thanks to advanced inverter-driven compressors.

New refrigerants now support hot water production at up to 75°C and have lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) for increased environmental friendliness.

How does a ground source heat pump work?

  • A water/glycol mixture (brine) circulates through underground pipes.
  • The brine absorbs heat from the ground and transfers it to a refrigerant.
  • The refrigerant boils and turns into gas.
  • The gas is compressed, raising its temperature.
  • The hot gas flows into a condenser, transferring heat to water for property heating or domestic hot water.
  • The refrigerant gas returns to liquid form.
  • The liquid cools and reduces the pressure via an expansion valve.
  • The cycle repeats.
