RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE (RHI)
The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a Government funded payment scheme to encourage investment in specific renewable heat technologies. Payments vary according to the technology, heat generated and tariff rate. Tariff rates are linked to the Retail Price Index, thus representing a real return on investment.
The following summarises the key elements of the existing scheme:
- Payments made quarterly over 20 years for commercial properties
- Payments made quarterly over 7 years for domestic properties
- Payments based on actual heat usage, system size and tariff. See tariffs for individual technologies below.

Compatible with Energy Savings Trust (EST) small business loans: 5% interest rate if also collecting RHI, from £1,000 to £100,000, repayable over 8 years.

Home Renewables Loan Scheme
From 1st August 2012 the interest free loans for renewable heating systems increased to a maximum of £10,000 under the home renewables 0% loan scheme offered by Home Energy Scotland. Interest free loans for renewable electricity systems remain at a maximum of £2,400 under the home renewables loan scheme but as a homeowner you should also contact your local Home Energy Scotland advice centre on 0800 512 012 to ask if there are any other financial incentives available under local area-based schemes.

Please remember that if you are interested in renewable heating systems you can combine both the Scottish Government interest free renewables loan and the UK Government’s RHPP2 grant (also available via HES) so long as funding from both does not exceed 100% of the cost of the system.
